REUTERS/Tina Bellon/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 1 (Reuters) - Aurora Innovation (AUR.O) on Wednesday opened its first lane for driverless trucks connecting Dallas and Houston, supported by its commercial trucking terminal in Houston, ahead of a launch in 2024. "Bringing our commercial-ready terminals and services online a year ahead of our planned commercial driverless launch between Dallas and Houston enables us to focus next year on integrating our driver-ready trucks into our customers' operations," said Chief Product Officer Sterling Anderson. Aurora said it would operate its terminals day and night, which will support more than 75 commercial loads for pilot customers. Aurora's portfolio of products includes Aurora Driver, its self-driving technology that can be employed across vehicle types, and driverless trucking subscription service Aurora Horizon. Aurora has partnerships with Uber Technologies (UBER.N), Toyota (7203.T), Volvo (VOLVb.ST), and PACCAR (PCAR.O), among others.

A veto by the governor can still be overturned if the legislature chooses to vote in favor of the bill with a two-thirds majority in each house. While many states, including Texas and Arkansas, have allowed the testing and operation of self-driving trucks, California - home to Alphabet (GOOGL.O), Apple (AAPL.O) and some of the most cutting-edge tech startups - bars autonomous trucks weighing more than 10,001 pounds. Developing autonomous technology has proved harder and more expensive than expected, leading to job cuts and even companies shutting shop. But labor unions led by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters have been calling for Governor Newsom to sign the bill, saying autonomous trucks - some of which weigh over 80,000 pounds - were unsafe and would lead to job losses. Governor Newsom in his veto message said any regulations framed by the department of motor vehicles would be transparent, with inputs from stakeholders and experts to ensure safety.

(Excluding Aurora's stock price, shares of the Nasdaq-listed Better Home & Finance are down more than 59% from the opening day.) In an emailed statement, Schaefer said that the company plans to replace at least some of the laid-off employees. Employees were given 30 days of pay, and up to three months of company-provided COBRA coverage, according to two laid-off employees. The mortgage industry has been hit hard by rising rates, leading to revenue declines and layoffs across the industry. Both former employees told Insider that they were optimistic that the cash infusion might offer some relief after a year of what felt like constant layoffs.

This first trial involves city of Aurora police officer Randy Roedema and former officer Jason Rosenblatt, who are both charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and other charges. Local prosecutors at first declined to press charges in McClain's death. Aurora police officer Nathan Woodyard, who is accused of putting McClain in a chokehold, will stand trial alone on the same charges in October. Two paramedics who injected McClain with ketamine are scheduled for a joint trial on the same charges in November. The other two officers and the paramedics have been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the trial.

Instagram posts — which often showcase trips to Antarctica — may have given expedition cruising more publicity, but this form of cruising isn't new. Today, there is stiff competition among expedition cruise lines to launch more technologically advanced vessels and to secure onboard talent. Source: Aurora ExpeditionsNoah Brodsky, chief commercial officer of Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, described expedition cruising as the "breakout travel trend of the decade." Expedition cruising is also a good option for the growing number of solo travelers. "Unfortunately, this has meant the new expedition cruise ships have become larger and the expedition experience itself has been sacrificed," he told CNBC.

The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve is especially great for star gazing. But in one of the darkest places on Earth — the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve in New Zealand — that's not an issue. Aoraki is the second-largest dark sky reserve in the world, ranking at a level 2 on the nine-level Bortle Dark-Sky Scale for light pollution. Attorneys for all five defendants entered pleas of not guilty to manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and other charges. Police restrained the slight-of-built McClain in a carotid neck hold, commonly known as a choke hold. A public outcry over the McClain death prompted Colorado's governor to order the state attorney general to review the case. Rosenblatt was fired after he responded with a "Haha" text message to photos taken by uninvolved officers mocking McClain's death. In addition to homicide charges, the two paramedics under indictment, Jeremy Cooper and Peter Cichuniec, were charged with assault for their role in administering the drug injection.
REUTERS/Kevin Mohatt//File PhotoDENVER, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Elijah McClain, an unarmed Black man killed in 2019 after an encounter with police in Aurora, Colorado, died of an overdose of the powerful sedative ketamine that was injected by paramedics, a new autopsy report released on Friday concluded. Three police officers and two paramedics were criminally charged in McClain’s death in 2021, following protests. The officers subdued McClain with a carotid neck hold and handcuffed him, according to an indictment. Paramedics then arrived and injected him with a dose of ketamine too high for someone of his weight, according to the autopsy. Following the outcry, Colorado Governor Jared Polis appointed the state’s attorney general to review McClain's death.
